Most of Duck Life 3 is spent training a duck between races. Classic Bowling is a quick change of pace for the same browser tab: a 3D ten-pin bowling lane where each throw takes a few seconds and a full game takes a few minutes. Code This Lab made it, and it uses real-time physics, so the pins bounce off each other differently every time.

The three-press throw

Classic Bowling breaks every delivery into three decisions. First you choose where the bowler stands: the Left and Right arrow keys walk them along the foul line. Pressing Space locks that spot and starts a power meter on the left of the screen rising and falling. The second press stops it. A third indicator, a swinging arrow for spin, then appears, and the last press sends the ball down the lane with whatever curve the arrow showed.

Touch screens use taps for the same three steps. There is no aiming with the mouse during the roll itself; once the ball leaves the bowler's hand you can only watch.

How the score adds up

The scoreboard uses standard ten-pin rules across ten frames:

  • Strike: all ten pins with the first ball. That frame earns ten plus the next two balls.
  • Spare: the rest cleared with the second ball. That frame earns ten plus the next ball.
  • Open frame: pins left standing. You get only what you knocked down.

A run of twelve strikes is a perfect 300, and the game marks it on the final screen.

Getting more strikes

The pocket matters more than speed. A ball that arrives just to one side of the front pin with a little hook spreads the rack better than one that hits it full on. Try a starting spot one step off centre with a small spin back toward the middle and keep repeating it until it works most of the time. When pins are left behind, change only one thing for the spare: move the bowler and throw straight, rather than also changing power and spin.

The power meter is the step people rush. A ball near the top of the meter is fast, but it also drifts further if your spin was off. A medium meter with an accurate line usually wins.

Short sessions

Classic Bowling is HTML5, so it starts without a download or sign-up and runs on laptops, Chromebooks and phones. A full ten frames fits easily between Duck Life 3 training rounds.

Questions about Classic Bowling

Is Classic Bowling unblocked at school?

Classic Bowling runs in an ordinary browser tab from ducklife3.org, with nothing to download or install, so it plays on most school Chromebooks and work computers. If a network filter blocks the site, only that network's administrator can change it.

How do you curve the ball in Classic Bowling?

After you set the line and the power, a swinging arrow appears. Stopping it to one side gives the ball a hook in that direction; stopping it in the middle sends the ball straight.

Can I play Classic Bowling on a tablet?

Yes. On touch devices each tap moves to the next step of the throw, so you do not need a keyboard.

How many frames are in a game?

Ten, as in real bowling. Strikes and spares in the tenth frame give you the bonus balls you would get at an alley.
